London Marathon 26th April, 2009

If I can run for 3,000 hours on 26th April…

then the least you can do is sponsor me!

Well, I did it!  The official results of the London Marathon are as follows:

the winner
was the Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiri who broke the course record and crossed the line in 2 hours 5 minutes 10 seconds.

But, in 21,112th place with a time of 5 hours 21 minutes 24 seconds was CHICK YUILL!  Which means that around 11,000 people took longer than me.  It's great not to be last.  (You can see me having a well-earned rest at mile 17 in the photo opposite.) Actually I was a little disappointed about my time, but I ran out of legs at mile 21 and had to walk the last five miles.  It wasn't entirely unexpected as I'd lost a month's training with a back injury.

The good news is that it was a glorious day in London, though just a little too hot for running.   But I've raised around £3,000 for the work of the Message Trust so, all in all, I'm pretty satisfied.

The highlight of the day?  As we were walking to the station to catch the train to our daughter Catriona's house we followed a little boy who was holding his dad's hand and looking up admiringly at his medal.  But then the kid noticed that other people also had medals.  This confused him for just a moment so he asked his dad, 'Did other people win, too?'  To which his dad responded, 'I guess they must have since they've all got medals!'  And that pretty well sums up a great day.

And just in case you think I'm one of those folk who says at the end of it, 'Never again', I ought to tell you that Margaret and I have entered our names already for the ballot for places in next year's London Marathon!  Gluttons for punishment...

To everyone who supported by their prayers or their sponsorship a big THANK YOU.

Welcome
